How Are You Showing Up?

In the marketing of goods and services, there are the famous “4 Ps of Marketing”- product, price, place, and promotion, and any good business owner makes sure that all four components work synergistically to bring want-satisfying products or services to a core market to achieve established objectives. In other words, people (the target audience) must fall in love with a brand and want to engage with it by spending their money. To do that, the brand must also consider a 5th P which is its “position”. Let’s stop here and explain why we are talking about marketing and business. Well, I have long believed that marketing concepts can be applied to the ultimate business which is “the business of you”. You are one big walking corporation and how you show up or position yourself can determine how successful you will be.

Your “position” is your image or personal identity. It’s how you see yourself and how everyone else sees you too. I think one of the biggest personal challenges we face is reconciling the person we are with the person we want to be, especially if there are others telling us who we should be. If you have a poor self-image, then you must re-define how you think about yourself. Ask yourself:

1. How do I perceive myself?

2. How do others perceive me?

3. How do I want others to perceive me?

Take a good look at the standards you use to determine who you are but don’t ever define yourself by anything (or anyone) that will not be around next year! Be sure you can communicate your strengths to successfully position yourself onto your patrons’ “cannot do without” list. Remember you are working toward creating consistency with your image to influence others to patronize your “business”. 😉
